The
Shenandoah Valley is filled with history and magnificent
views.
George
Washington, in his capacity as a surveyor,
traveled and measured much of the land in the
northern Shenandoah Valley.
Daniel
Morgan, an American Revolutionary army officer
(made brigadier general in 1780 and defeated a
large British force at Cowpens, S.C.) led Virginia
militiamen in 1794 to help
suppress the Whiskey Rebellion. His home -
Soldier's Rest - is a few miles from Winchester.
He is buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetary in Winchester.
Looking
down from Bolivar Heights at the confluence of the
Shenandoah and the Potomac rivers, Thomas
Jefferson claimed to have experienced the most
beautiful view in America.
Literally
dozens of Civil War battles were waged up and down
the valley as the City of Winchester changed hands
at least seventy-two times during the terrible
conflict.
The area
is replete with streams and rivers, mountains and
vales. Fishing, canoeing, hang gliding,
Civil War sites and re-enactments, historic
buildings and tours -- it is all here.
As
temperatures decline in the Fall, the trees begin
their beautiful transformation to reds and yellows
and orange.
It is the
hope of Historic Properties that we can help you
find and enjoy some of this rich heritage and
beauty.
